Engineering
The Engineering Group of the Asphalt Materials Section is involved in the following activities:
Construction Support (Greg Sholar):
- Project level support, as needed by Districts/Designers/Contractors, for all asphalt materials-related issues.
- Specification development and refinement. Specification interpretation for Districts and Contractors.
- Materials Manual (Chapter 3) development and revisions.
- Technical oversight of the binder and emulsion programs.
Research and Field Operations (Mohab El‑Hakim):
- Approval of new asphalt mix designs and revisions to existing designs
- Aggregate approval for friction courses (TWP/DFT)
- Inspection of binder and emulsion facilities
- Collaborations with National Research Centers and Universities
- In-house research of new products and processes
- AASHTO Technical Subcommittees 2a, 2b, 2c, and 2d participation
- CTQP asphalt course development and revisions
